Gruwold

Gruwold's Symbol

Gruwold created and shaped The Land of Pelagia. It is he who raised the mountains, carved the valleys, smoothed the plains and made the soils, silts and sand from the rock of Pelagia's birth. With his finger, he traced the paths of the rivers and streams and with his thumb, he made the lakes and inland seas. For all of this, we give Gruwold thanks and honour him.

Gruwold takes great interest in those who work the soil and rewards those who respect it with bountiful crops and punishes those who do not with poor soils and dry river beds. Likewise, a potter or an engineer would be wise to give a prayer to Gruwold before starting a project, lest they find their clay unworkable or the foundations of a new bridge give way.

Gruwold's Realm is not only the dry surfaces of the land, but it also includes fresh water lakes, rivers and streams. He amicably shares the responsibility for these with Marilsasta.

Gruwold despaired when the Great Cataclysm destroyed much of his work, shattering the continents he had so carefully and lovingly shaped.

Name of God: Gruwold

Neutral: Bercairn, Chaenth, Idira, Kotuzin, Laurendi, Rhianna, Verec, Zumar

Worshippers: Good: Farmers who till the earth, potters who take the clay to shape it, glassmakers who use sand to make their glittering wares, engineers who build upon the earth, a traveller going through a high mountain pass - all these people and more pray to Gruwold in thanks for his Gifts and for success in their deeds.

Evil: Someone who doesn't want a dam built across a river might pray to Gruwold for the dam to fail and wash away. An evil cleric may ask Gruwold for an Earthquake to topple a good king's castle.

Temples and Clergy: Temples and shrines to Gruwold can be found everywhere across Pelagia. Some of the better known temples grace locations that have views of some of Gruwold's greatest works - spectacular mountains and valleys, great gorges and deserts. On a smaller scale, farmers and potters sometimes have shrines to him in their homes and workshops.

The Church of Gruwold has two main interests. The first is the mountains and valleys, rivers and lakes - the greater works of Gruwold's creation. Many followers of Gruwold spend their time travelling around Pelagia, surveying and documenting the landforms and making detailed maps. The second interest is in the finer things of Gruwold's making - the soils, sands and silts. Clerics tend to the needs of farmers, craftsmen and other people who use Gruwold's Gifts on a daily basis. The Church is well organised, with a clear hierarchical structure and followers who are devoted to such things as map making.

Title of Clergy: Geographer (Cartographer for specialist map-makers.)

Title of the Leader: Master Geographer

Name of the Leader: Jebeddo "Badger" Shleppen (Male Gnome)

- Give thanks each day for the splendour of the plains, mountains and valleys, for they are our homes.

Colours: Brown, green and a touch of blue, usually a stripe.

Symbols: A triangular mountain peak with a river flowing past its base.

Favoured Weapon: Gruwold has been seen wielding a halberd in battle, while his messenger, Gaea, prefers to use an enormous scythe. Gruwold's followers may use any weapon of choice.

Prayers: A farmer's prayer:
Mighty Gruwold, thank thee for the richness of this earth I till. I thank thee for the waters of the stream. May my crops grow well, with these Blessings, your two Gifts.

An engineer's prayer:
As I lay this first stone, I pray to thee, Gruwold, that it may rest assuredly upon your ground. I ask that you Bless this structure, so that it stands firm and strong for many years.

A potter's prayer:
I thank you, Gruwold, for this gift of clay from the ground. I dedicate my works this day to Your honoured Name.
