Regions of Pelagia

The world of Pelagia has been divided by its sentient beings into fifteen different areas known as "regions". Regions may be politically organized areas where the people are ruled by single government, or simply a particular geographical area with a clear boundary. Each region is usually culturally unique, though there may be some overlap on the borders. The regions vary in size, from the huge icy expanse of the White Sea, to the tiny chain of islands known as Vortigern. They may consist of one island, or many.

The region of Arcata is where the PCs will begin their adventure. It will comprise the bulk of their time in Pelagia. The other regions will be referred to in various places (books, NPC and PC origins etc) but, in the beginning, there may be little or no access to them.

When you look through the region descriptions, most of them list details under a "theme". This was done to provide mental picture for you to help understand the nature of the region in real world terms - whether it be factual or mythological.

Each region has a very strong theme, evident in the way the NPCs look and converse, clothing, food and drink and eventually, if and when there is access to the actual locations, the very landscape, the types of animals and monsters, lighting and even the sounds.

These themes and other information listed can be used to help develop character backgrounds or to understand NPCs from these regions. It is up to you to decide, based on your character's background, how much of the world they would know. The more advanced the culture or region, the more likely the peoples there know of the other regions and have had interactions with them. Those who live on the coast are also more likely to have had more contact, etc..

Thus, it is possible to create PCs who originate from regions other than Arcata, but you must keep these points in mind:

  • Your PC should have a background reason as to why they are away from their homeland and reason(s) why they can not or will not return home.

  • You will need to make an effort to roleplay the different culture of your PC's region of origin and the PC must have the appropriate physical appearance for that region.

  • Some regions feature non-PC races as the dominant race(s). In some regions, certain PC races are non-existent or extremely rare.
